Trip to the SAM: Victorian Radicals

Dr. Chiyo Ishikawa, Seattle Art Museum’s Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, and U-M alumna, has graciously agreed to provide a group of 30 lucky U-M alums with a tour of the exciting new SAM exhibition “Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement.”

The works of the men and women presented in the exhibition illustrate a spectrum of avant-garde practices of the Victorian period and demonstrate Britain’s first modern art response to industrialization.

Interest in a Book Club?

Book Club

We’ve got a group of U-M alums who have expressed interest in a book discussion group, and have decided that we will be reading the new novel The Heavens by Sandra Newman. We’ll be meeting in a month or two for discussion. It’s not too late to join us! If you’re interested, shoot me a note at herb@umseattle.org and let me know your location.

Admitted Students Reception

We are hosting our annual pizza party for Puget Sound area high school seniors (and their parents) who have been admitted to the University of Michigan. We need alumni, especially recent grads, and any parents of current students, to attend, as we try to make our best case for the U-M! Share your most memorable U-M experiences and help answer students’ questions. We need your help as we try to convert these admitted students into enrolled students.

JANE with the Seattle Symphony

Join your fellow Wolverines to immerse yourself in the world of pioneering primatologist Jane Goodall with the stunning National Geographic documentary, JANE. Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of Goodall, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. The film is set against a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass.

Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel

The award-winning songwriters (and U-M alumni), Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, along with novelist Val Emmick, will be in Seattle to present Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel, which expands upon the characters and story from the hugely successful musical. Hurry and get your ticket (which includes a pre-signed copy of the book!) before you’re left waving through a window!

M Talks in Seattle

The University of Michigan is bringing two of its leaders to the Seattle area for talks to and with local alums.

Fiona Lee, an Associate Dean and Professor, will be talking about “Inclusive Excellence in Higher Education.”

Jonathan Massey, Dean and Professor from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, will talk on the subject of “Designing Equity.”

Waitress at The Paramount with U-M Alumna Desi Oakley

We’ve got 20 great seats available for the touring Broadway production of Waitress at the Paramount Theatre, with U-M alum Desi Oakley in the starring role – and, of course, we’ve arranged for an exclusive chat with the star following this Sunday matinee!
