Interested in Joining Our Scholarship Committee?

Our U-M Club of Seattle Scholarship Committee is seeking to expand its membership!

Founded during the 1930’s, this scholarship annually awards $20,000 or more to exceptional U-M students from the greater Seattle area. While our scholarship’s funds are managed/invested by U-M, all decisions regarding awarding of each scholarship is handled locally by our volunteer committee. We have one scholarship available for an incoming freshman with high financial need. The remaining scholarships (typically, 3-5) are awarded based on academic performance with factors such as community service and extracurricular activities strongly considered.

The committee’s work is heavily concentrated during the March-May period each year. The committee is responsible for working with the U-M Financial Aid Office to identify eligible students, send out applications, review these applications, interview applicants (for incoming first-year students only), and select recipients. The committee formally meets once per year, typically in May on the Eastside, to share each member’s prior evaluation of the applicants and align on which recipients will receive an award and to allocate amounts. Occasionally, the committee will have one additional meeting during the year to discuss potential changes to our policies and procedures.

The committee, led by Ginny Rowley, is comprised of 5 local U-M alums. We are looking to add 1-2 additional committee members. We prefer someone willing to make a multi-year commitment to the committee to provide stability and consistency. The new member(s) will mainly be responsible for individually reviewing all applications (each one includes up to a 2-page personal statement + transcript) in April, interviewing selected applicants (for incoming first-year students only) in May, and participating in the full committee meeting in May to discuss, evaluate, and designate recipients.

If this sounds of interest to you, then please fill out this web form to let us know of your interest and qualifications.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
